Introduction and Objectives: The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of the chronic running exercise in diabetic rats on lipid peroxidation in hippocampus tissue. The study was carried out in Experimental Medicine Research and Application Center of Selçuk University on adult male Wistar rats that were obtained from the same center. The study protocol was approved by the Ethics Committee of Experimental Animals of Experimental Medicine Research and Application Center of Selcuk University. Methods: A total of 40 rats were equally divided into 4 groups: Group 1, Control, Group 2, Exercise Control, Group 3, Diabetes, Group 4, Diabetes + Exercise. Group 3 and 4 animals were injected with intraperitoneal streptozotocin (STZ) at a dose of 40 mg / kg twice daily at 24-hour intervals, and thus, diabetic occured. Animals in group 2 and 4 ran at 20m/min for 45 min on a rat treadmill during a 4-week period. The hippocampus tissue samples of the animals were taken under general anesthesia 24 hours after the last running exercise. MDA as an ndicator of tissue damage in hippocampus tissue samples and GSH levels as an indicator of antioxidant activity were determined by spectrophotometric method. Results: In our study, the lowest hippocampus MDA and the highest hippocampus GSH levels were obtained in the diabetes group (G3) (P <0.05). The hippocampus MDA and GSH values of the control (G1), the exercise control (G2), and the diabetes + exercise group (G4) were not different from each other. Conclusion: The results of our study show that oxidative stress that cannot be prevented in spite of the increasing GSH levels in hippocampus tissue in diabetic rats can be prevented with chronic exercise for 4 weeks.
