Degenerative disease and instability in the lower lumbar spine may necessitate fusion and stabilization supplemented by instrumentation to the sacrum. This study has been conducted to evaluate sacrum anatomy of the Middle Anatolian population in terms of morphometric measurements and make a comparison with previous studies as well as giving a guidance to the surgeons. The present study was performed on human sacrum within bone collection of Anatomy Departments of Karatay University, Faculty of Medicine and Necmettin Erbakan University, Meram Faculty of Medicine. Morphometric measurements of the present study were performed by a caliper. Morphometric measurements were performed from important anatomic points on canalis sacralis and facies anterior on 73 dried sacrum samples (26 35.6% males and 47 64.4% females). and as well as spinal canal maximum width (SCW) and spinal canal mid-diameter (SCD) were measured. Moreover, vertebral body maximum transverse width of S1 (VBW) as well as vertebral body mid-diameter of S1 (VBD) were also measured. The results obtained were evaluated by SPSS 21.0 program. The mean Sacral height (SH) in male was 99.44± 11.41mm and in females it was 93.65±10.33. P-value is 0.037 by conventional criteria this difference is considered to be statistically significant. The mean sacral breadth (SW) in male was 113± 7.05mm and in females it was 111.13±9.04mm. P-value is 0.334 by conventional criteria this difference is considered to be statistically not significant. Spinal canal maximum width (SCW), spinal canal mid-diameter (SCD), vertebral body maximum transverse width of S1 (VBW) and vertebral body mid-diameter of S1 (VBD) difference is considered to be statistically not significant. We believe that the data obtained from this study would be useful to detect exact spinal surgery, screw insertion is crucial in spinal instrumentation in order to prevent neurological injury and/or fixation failure.en_US
