dc.description.abstract	The tradition of pious Islamic foundations goes back several centuries, they can be regarded as civil society organisations avant la lettre. After colonial politics and post-colonial modernisation efforts led to their demise in large parts of the Islamic world, they again gain in recognition in Muslim societies.
